CTJ's 2014 Bands of America trophies Entering its 11th season, the Claudia Taylor Johnson High School Marching Band has grown to nearly 350 members and state and national prominence as one of the finest marching bands — establishing a reputation for quality, innovation, and excitement. Each season brings a new and different challenge, but as each season’s results demonstrate, Claudia Taylor Johnson has become a consistent finalist, caption winner, and championship contender in competition.

In 2018, Johnson won the Bands of America South Texas and Austin Regional Championships to extend a streak of BOA championship first-place finishes to five consecutive and eight BOA championship overall. Later in the season, Johnson placed fifth at the BOA San Antonio Super Regional — its eighth consecutive Top Five finish in that event, tying the record set by Marcus (2005-2012).  CTJ was awarded “Sweepstakes” Division 1 ratings at the 2018 Texas University Interscholastic League (UIL) Region 12 Marching Contest and finished third at the UIL Area D contest to advance the to UIL 6A State Marching Contest, Nov. 5-6 at the Alamodome.

In 2017, Johnson capped off its season by winning the BOA San Antonio Super Regional with a record finals run score of 96.625. It was the third BOA regional championship of the season. CTJ also won the Austin Regional and the West Texas Regional in Midland, and
was the Class AAAAAA champion at the 34th Rough Rider Marching Contest.

In 2016, Johnson made its second ever trip to the BOA Grand Nationals in Indianapolis, Ind., finishing ninth overall in its second Grand National finals appearance. Johnson was named a finalist in all four Bands of America competitions on its 2016 schedule.

In the five-year span comprised of the 2014 through 2018 marching seasons, only one program in the nation, Carmel (Ind.), with nine, has won more BOA championships than CTJ’s eight BOA championships. The next closest marching bands are Broken Arrow (Okla.) and Tarpon Springs (Fla.), with six each.

Additionally, Johnson has finished in the Top Five in 19 out of the past 20 BOA regional, super regional, or grand nationals events, between the beginning of the 2012 marching season through the 2018 BOA San Antonio Super Regional. CTJ was also the bronze medalist at the 2014 UIL State Marching Contest.
