CTJ Ninth At BOA Grand Nationals;

Fourth BOA Finals Appearance of ’16

CTJ at BOA Grand NationalsClaudia Taylor Johnson wrapped its 2016 marching competition season with a ninth-place finish Saturday night at the Bands of America Grand National Championship at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. Johnson's 91.30 score in finals was its highest of the season for its unique, innovative show, "Flashdance."

"Tonight's performance was truly magical," said CTJ Director of Bands Jarrett Lipman. "I am always proud of our band. I have never seen them perform like they did tonight.... Won't ever forget this night."

CTJ was making just its second trip to Grand Nationals, having made a finals appearance and overall eighth-place finish in 2011.
In 2016, Johnson was named a finalist in all four of the Bands of America competitions on its schedule — demonstrating consistency and excellence.

The 2016 BOA Grand National champion is Carmel (Ind.), which tied Avon (Ind.) with a finals score of 97.45 but was awarded the "Eagle" championship trophy based on its higher score for General Effect. It was the first time in event history that a tie had been recorded for first place.

Three other Texas schools made finals: Cedar Park (5th, 95.30), Leander (6th, 94.65), and Ronald Reagan (7th, 91.85).

The Bands of America Grand National Championship began Thursday with 100 bands from across the country. The field was pared to 36 semi-finalists on Friday.

In what was considered by some to be one of the richest and most challenging BOA Grand Nationals finals fields in recent history, each of the 13 finalists was ranked among the Top 30 bands in the nation by HornRank.com.
