CTJ Completes Magical Season With BOA SA Title

The Claudia Taylor Johnson Marching Band won the 2017 Bands of America San Antonio Super Regional Championship, capping a dream season and topping a powerhouse field of some of the nation’s top high school bands with a record-breaking run in finals performance at the Alamodome.

CTJ is presented with the BOA San Antonio trophyJohnson’s finals score of 96.625 was the highest score ever posted at a BOA super regional event held anywhere in the country — including St. Louis, Atlanta, and Indianapolis. The old record of 96.20 was recorded by five-time 5A/6A UIL State Champion Marcus at the 2007 San Antonio Super Regional.

CTJ’s score was more than a full point ahead of second-place Hebron, the Class AAAA preliminaries winner (95.600), and third-place Vandegrift (95.575). Perennial Grand Nationals championship contender Avon (Ind.) boosted the strength of the field this year by making the trip south, and finished fourth (95.375). Fellow NEISD school Ronald Reagan took fifth (94.875).

Additionally, Johnson’s judged score is the highest any band in the nation has received in 2017 leading into next week’s Grand Nationals championship in Indianapolis.

CTJ won the Outstanding General Effect and Outstanding Music Performance captions for its finals performance of its 2017 show, “The Forest Through The Trees.” Johnson’s Amazon and Brazilian rainforest-themed show won each of the three BOA regional events it entered this season — Austin, West Texas in Midland, and San Antonio.

The show is highlighted by the crowd-pleasing ballad, Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” — performed by CTJ’s trombone ensemble led by sophomore Eli Canales — and also features the band’s excellent saxophone quartet, trumpet and flute solos and ensembles.

For CTJ, in just its 10th season of competition, the win was its sixth BOA title, and the three captions it collected were the 50th, 51st, and 52nd captions in school history. Johnson also won the BOA San Antonio Super Regional in 2014.

Johnson finished in third place in the Class AAAA preliminaries competition behind Hebron and Vandegrift by razor-thin margins. Just three-tenths of a point separated first and third place.

CTJ made an encore run at the conclusion of finals, with the Avon and Reagan bands remaining in attendance to watch in the spirit of marching band camaraderie.

This was the season-ending competition for CTJ, and a fitting end to its most successful marching season in its 10 seasons of existence.
