2017-18 Camp & Training Schedules

CT Johnson High School Bands

2017-18 May/June Mini Camps & August Training Schedules & FAQs

What are “June Mini Camp” and “August Summer Training”?

Mini Camp and August Summer Training are extended periods of rehearsal held during the spring and summer months to prepare the Johnson Band for the upcoming competitive marching and football seasons. We will spend time rehearsing marching and music fundamentals, as well as learning the material for our fall Field Show and football shows. We also do a variety of team building exercises during the camp, and will go to Schlitterbahn again this year.

Beyond rehearsals, the camp and summer training serve as an opportunity for the students to come together to get to know the other members of the Johnson Band Family. Bonding opportunities take place throughout the week, as sections will spend time eating together, gathering at each others’ houses for social events, and ultimately perform together for the first time as members of a World Class Program. Camp and summer training are always an enjoyable time and are key ingredients for the success of the program.

When and where is the SEASON KICK-OFF REHEARSAL in May?

For this year, as we work to develop our show at a higher level, and improve the design and speed at which we complete/learn material, we will hold one night rehearsal during May this year. This rehearsal will be held at Johnson High School for members of the 2017-18 Woodwind, Brass, and Percussion sections only. All materials will be distributed at camp.

Friday, May 19, 4:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m. at Johnson High School
**Incoming 9th graders should attend this rehearsal

When and where is JUNE “MINI CAMP” for this year?

The June camp is required for all students participating in band the upcoming school year. This camp will be held at Johnson High School for members of the 2017-2018 Woodwind, Brass, and Percussion sections only. All materials will be distributed at camp.

When is Colorguard June Camp for this year?

Colorguard will hold a separate June Camp on Monday, June 5, Tuesday, June 6, and Wednesday, June 7 from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. at Johnson High School.

Is June camp and August Summer Training mandatory?

Barring emergency or academic conflict, all members of the Johnson Band should attend all scheduled rehearsals, whether or not you plan to do Varsity Marching Band or only Pep/Concert Band. Incoming 9th graders/current 8th graders are excused from the MAY BAND REHEARSAL if it conflicts with any middle school events (band, athletic, UIL, etc.). We realize there maybe conflicts for our incoming members, and of course will work around these.

Why are summer rehearsals so long?

Our camp/summer training schedule is comparable to those programs competing at the highest level of UIL and Bands of America, and is designed to allow us to learn the fundamentals necessary to perform at a World Class level. We learn a great deal of our fall field show during summer training. Once school starts, we are limited to eight hours of rehearsal a week outside the school day. In a normal summer training day, we will rehearse as much in one day as we do an entire week when school starts. Many programs outside of Texas that we will compete against rehearse anywhere from 14-16 hours a week outside of school, compared to our eight. It is critical for us to learn as much as possible during summer training, as we are limited when school starts.

The movement audition will be based off of material ALL students learn during spring camps, so everyone is on a level playing field.
