2016 Marching Season

Show: ‘Flashdance’

The Story of CTJ at Grand Nats

“We talk a lot to the kids, in their performances, about not just performing to be noticed but performing to be remembered. And that's a lot about what we try to do with Claudia Taylor is just to create things that people will really enjoy watching and listening to ... and that they're going to remember and they're going to talk about.” Jarrett Lipman, Director of Bands

Fourth BOA Finals Appearance of ’16 for Claudia Taylor Johnson

CTJ at BOA Grand Nationals Claudia Taylor Johnson wrapped its 2016 marching competition season with a ninth-place finish Saturday night at the Bands of America Grand National Championship at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. Johnson's 91.30 score in finals was its highest of the season for its unique, innovative show, “Flashdance.”

“Tonight's performance was truly magical,” said CTJ Director of Bands Jarrett Lipman. “I am always proud of our band. I have never seen them perform like they did tonight.... Won't ever forget this night.”

CTJ was making just its second trip to Grand Nationals, having made a finals appearance and overall eighth-place finish in 2011. In 2016, Johnson was named a finalist in all four of the Bands of America competitions on its schedule — demonstrating consistency and excellence.

The 2016 BOA Grand National champion is Carmel (Ind.), which tied Avon (Ind.) with a finals score of 97.45 but was awarded the “Eagle” championship trophy based on its higher score for General Effect. It was the first time in event history that a tie had been recorded for first place. Three other Texas schools made finals: Cedar Park (5th, 95.30), Leander (6th, 94.65), and Ronald Reagan (7th, 91.85).

The Bands of America Grand National Championship began with 100 bands from across the country.  In what was considered by some to be one of the richest and most challenging BOA Grand Nationals finals fields in recent history, each of the 13 finalists was ranked among the Top 30 bands in the nation by HornRank.com.

Johnson Extends Streak of Top-Five Finishes At Alamodome to 6

CTJ at BOA San Antonio
In a power-packed finals competition at the Bands of America San Antonio Super Regional, the Claudia Taylor Johnson Marching Band and its fun, innovative and musically challenging show, “Flashdance,” finished fourth in its final tune-up for the BOA Grand Nationals Championship. The placement was CTJ's fourth top-five finish during the 2016 competition season, and its sixth consecutive top-five finish at the BOA San Antonio Super Regional. The finals competition at the Alamodome was among the most difficult in recent memory — one that some argued made BOA San Antonio a “second Grand Nationals.” Twelve of the 14 finalists were ranked among the Top 30 nationally by Hornrank.com. Johnson’s 89.70 finals score was its highest of the season, demonstrating fast, continued improvement heading into BOA Grand Nationals week.
